As a student of psychology at Hope, you鈥檒l engage a curriculum that combines specialized coursework, collaborative research and hands-on experience with our faculty.

Every student who majors in psychology will:

Conduct research through courses with research labs

• Research Methods I (PSY 201)
  
• Research Methods II (PSY 202)
• Introduction to Neuroscience (PSY 211)
  
• Applied Research in Psychology (PSY360)

Engage in service learning with a field placement

• Developmental Psychology field placement
  
• Internships (PSY 496): Roughly 50 students per year complete an internship for credit

Have the opportunity to study off campus

• 6+ credits of off-campus courses in psychology programs through the , and many off-campus opportunities
  

Participate in in-depth seminars

• 3+ credits that focus on a specialty area

Expand their perspective

• 3 credits of a psychology-based course with global learning (domestic or international)
  

Tips from Faculty

PSY 100 and Statistics (MATH 115/215/219) are foundational courses, so take them early. Then, we recommend Research Methods (PSY 201) and Developmental Psychology (PSY 230).

After Developmental Psychology, we recommend survey courses in this order:

• Intro to Neuroscience (NSCI/PSY 211 & 212)
• Behavior Disorders (PSY 310)
• Health Psychology (PSY 325)
• Social Psychology (PSY 330)
• Cognitive Psychology (PSY 340)

鈥淢ajoring in psychology and immersing myself in the psychology  department at Hope was one of the most important decisions I made throughout my four years in college. Not only does the department offer a variety of interesting classes and opportunities for research, but the professors are also very dedicated to getting to know their students and supporting them, both academically and personally. My advice to incoming students is to take classes beyond what is required by the major. Getting involved in research is also a great opportunity. Research is a fun way to learn more about a particular area of psychology, better get to know professors and other students, and learn a lot of transferrable skills that will be useful for jobs or in graduate school. When I was entering college as a freshman, I couldn鈥檛 have imagined how many great opportunities would be offered to me or how much I would enjoy studying psychology at Hope. I will forever be grateful for the way this department prepared me to move forward.鈥�
