Dr. Glen Stassen, who is the Lewis B. Smedes Professor of Ethics at Fuller Theological Seminary, will present “A Thicker Jesus is the Basis for Just Peace Making” on Thursday, Nov. 8, at 7:30 p.m. in Winants Auditorium of Graves Hall through the A.J. Muste Memorial Lecture Series at èƵ.
The public is invited. Admission is free.
Stassen is known for developing the “Just Peacemaking” theory in ethics on the question of war. He has published nine books, including “Just Peacemaking: Transforming Initiatives for Justice and Peace” and, new this fall, “A Thicker Jesus: International Discipleship in a Secular Age.” His concept of a “thicker Jesus” reflects viewing Jesus as Lord over the whole of life and not just one part of it.
Stassen holds degrees from the University of Virginia, Union Theological Seminary and Duke University, and has been a visiting scholar at Harvard, Columbia and the University of Heidelberg.
The A.J. Muste Memorial Lecture Series began in 1985 to commemorate the life and work of A.J. Muste, an alumnus of èƵ (1905) who became a tireless activist for the causes of peace and justice.
Jo Ann Ooiman Robinson, Muste’s biographer, presented the inaugural lecture. Subsequent lectures have been given by theologians, peace activists, labor organizers and prison reformers.
Graves Hall is located at 263 College Ave., between 10th and 12th streets.
