David Yandl
Adjunct FacultyClarinetist David Yandl brings a unique sensitivity to the standard repertoire and to contemporary works. Active as a solo, chamber and orchestral musician, he has performed at New York’s Carnegie Hall, Chicago’s Symphony Center and at festivals in the U.S. and Europe.
Highlights include Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto with the New York Symphonic Arts Ensemble and chamber music performances at the Aurora Chamber Music Festival in Vänersborg, Sweden. David was a semifinalist in the 2006 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, and his performances have been broadcast on WFMT 98.7 (Chicago).
A faculty member in the ÐÜèÔÚÏßÊÓƵ Department of Music since 2019, he currently is head of the winds, brass and percussion area. He teaches clarinet, saxophone, woodwind pedagogy and Introduction to Music.
David performs frequently with the Toledo, Grand Rapids, and West Michigan Symphonies and was an associate member of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago. He has also performed with the Boise Philharmonic, Concertante di Chicago, Jackson Symphony, Pennsylvania Centre Orchestra and West Point Band.
An accomplished multi-instrumentalist, he performs recital, orchestral and musical theatre repertoire on a range of woodwinds. During his eight-week run as woodwind soloist in Laurence Mark Wythe's "Tomorrow Morning The Musical," the show was named "Critic's Pick" by the Chicago Tribune. He has performed in theatrical productions at the International Festival of the Voice in New York alongside veterans of the Metropolitan Opera and Broadway stages, and regularly performs with Broadway national tours.
David also teaches at Alma College and Montcalm Community College, and previously taught at DePaul University, Michigan State University and Cornerstone University. A passionate advocate for music as an agent of social change, he has taught in tuition-free youth programs in Chicago, including Project SOAR and the El Sistema-affiliated YOURS Project (now People’s Music School).
His teachers and mentors include Larry Combs, Julie DeRoche, Yehuda Gilad, Theodore Oien and John Bruce Yeh. He completed additional studies at Universidad Alfonso X El Sabio in Madrid, Spain. He has conducted master classes at Pennsylvania State University, the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, and Manhattanville College.
